When you are in the middle of a debt free journey, it can seem like everything is a temptation to spend money – even the things that are a pain to part cash with at the best of times, such as home improvements.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the results but I don’t think anyone gets enthused about buying patio paving slabs or new paint. It would be even better to be able to wave a magic wand and have someone do all the work for us, but that is definitely out of the question right now!

Five years ago we extended our house, and then I got pregnant and suddenly all our spare money needed to be saved. It also meant we were left with a messy garden from the builders and a few niggly jobs that we are only just beginning to find the money for now being debt free is in sight.

However, it doesn’t stop me from dreaming of the improvements we could make to our home! Even though some of these are a long way off, these are the things I would most like to upgrade in our house:

  1. Conservatory / Windows

We are lucky to have a large lounge but since having children it would be great to have a connecting play area and a bit more space for the toys. I would prefer an orangery style with brick walls and large windows rather than the traditional all glass. Unfortunately this is a long way down the list and probably the most expensive, but it would definitely be one of my first purchase considerations if we suddenly found the money. As we live close to the motorway, replacement aluminium windows are also a must and some of our windows are now due an upgrade.

  1. Loft conversion

My dream would be to actually convert our loft into a useable bedroom with ensuite. Unfortunately, living in a bungalow we have a very low roof and there would simply not be the headroom. A more viable option would be to board out the loft and fit an easily retractable ladder so it could be used as a practical storage space – not somewhere where things get thrown and forgotten about for years. However at the moment this is exactly what it is!

Following the wise words of Marie Kondo I am busy decluttering and selling my unwanted goods on eBay. A converted loft would be an ideal storage space for my eBay stock and also free up space elsewhere such as under the beds.

  1. Garden

This is actually in the pipeline this year. We have money earmarked for a new fence – not the most exciting of purchases but a necessity all the same. We also need to complete new paving around the back door. A scrappy patch of garden left over from the builders still remains and I would love to turn this into a vegetable garden for my daughter to use – I think she would love it.

So there are my dream home improvements right now! Remember: by sacrificing your spending on the smaller, unnecessary things it can soon add up to something big!
