Sainsbury’s Nectar Prices: Will they save you money?
Sainsbury’s have joined Tesco in becoming the latest supermarket to offer exclusive prices to its loyalty card holders. Launched in April 2023, the new Nectar Prices offer Nectar Card holders up to 60% off the regular price for Nectar Card holders, in addition to the current offers already available via Nectar.
Hang on, haven’t Nectar Prices been around for a while?
Sort of, but not in the same way. “My Nectar Prices” – now called Your Nectar Prices – are exclusive weekly offers sent to shoppers via the Nectar app. These offers will continue to be sent, but they differ in that they are personalised to the individual based on their shopping habits and can only be used in store using the Sainsbury’s Smartshop scanners or app.
Whereas the new Nectar Prices are displayed in store and online and are available to anyone provided they scan a Nectar card at the point of purchase.
Your Nectar Prices will continue in the same way, with personalised offers being sent to you via the Nectar app for you to use in store .
How to find the new Nectar Prices
Much like Tesco Clubcard prices, the new Nectar prices are easily identifiable in store and online with a purple Nectar box logo where the Nectar price is labelled alongside the regular price.
As long as you scan a Nectar card at checkout or are shopping online with a registered account, you will be eligible for the Nectar price.
If you don’t currently have a Nectar account, you can sign up for free.
Are the new Nectar Prices actually worth it?
Currently at launch, there are around 300 items discounted on the Sainsbury’s website, with plans to expand this further. This includes a large percentage of well known brands in addition to Sainsbury’s own brand products. Like any offers, it is likely that the products on offer will change on a regular basis.
Current offers available at launch include:
Product | Nectar Price | Non Nectar Price | Cheapest Elsewhere according to Trolley.co.uk (April 23) |
Ariel All in 1 pods washing liquid capsules (39 washes) | £5.00 | £10.50 | N/A |
24 x 330ml Coke Zero cans | £5.00 | £10.00 | £7.99 |
Nescafe Gold Blend Coffee 200g | £4.00 | £8.10 | £5.50 |
Corona Extra Premium Lager x 12 bottles 330ml | £9.00 | £14.00 | £10.00 |
Aperol Spritz 70cl | £10.00 | £16.00 | £9.99 |
Kitkat original 2 finger x9 | £1.00 | £2.00 | £1.50 |
Walkers Ready salted Crisps 6 x25g | £1.35 | £1.95 | £1.50 |
Yorkshire Tea Bags x 240 | £4.75 | £6.30 | £5.00 |
Cadbury’s Chocolate Fingers 114g | £1.00 | £1.75 | £1.25 |
Hellman’s Real Mayonnaise 750ml Squeezy bottle | £3.25 | £3.90 | £2.00 |
As you can see, on most occasions the Nectar Price is cheaper than the next cheapest option (as of April 2023) with the expectation of the 750ml Hellman’s Mayonnaise and Aperol Spritz, but the savings aren’t as big when compared to the next cheapest price elsewhere.
For example, the Yorkshire Tea Nectar Price is only a 25p saving on Asda’s £5.00 price versus Sainsbury’s regular price of £6.30.
However, most of the Nectar Prices in this table are the lowest option, and unless you’re fond of trailing round multiple supermarkets to ensure you get the best price on everything, sometimes you just have to go for the best overall option for you.
Personally, it’s not enough to make me switch to Sainsbury’s from Asda for my main shop, but I certainly welcome the new scheme and plan to take advantage of Nectar Prices when I have the chance to.
If you are a Sainsbury’s shopper anyway then the Nectar Prices are going to be very welcome.
There seem to be a lot of offers on cleaning products, soft drinks and alcohol, and due to their high prices the savings on these items are quite significant, such as the cans of Coke Zero and the Aperol Spritz – even though this was actually £9.99 at Morrisons which beats the Nectar Price, if only by a penny.
These sort of items would be great to stock up on for a party if you know you are getting a decent price.
At the end of the day, even if the savings aren’t quite as big as Sainsbury’s would have you believe, lower prices can only be good news for the consumer.
