As you can see from the dates in this table, you can gain early access to these sales online a couple of days earlier with a Next sale VIP slot.
What is a Next VIP slot?
A Next VIP slot allows customers to get earlier access to the sales, and also preview the sales before they start so you can see which items are going to be reduced.
The preview allows you to make a note of any items you like and then find them quickly again during the sale using the “quickshop” number provided.
However, there are certain criteria that need to be met in order to qualify for a Next VIP slot.
How do I get a Next Vip sale slot?
- Next themselves are quite vague about what this criteria is on their official website, but some of the conditions were thought to be as follows:
- You must have an existing online account with Next;
- You must have at least £250 credit available on your NextPay account;
- You must have recently ordered and not returned an item using your NextPay credit account;
- There may be other criteria involved, so it cannot be guaranteed that you will definitely receive a sale VIP slot following these rules.
However, I DO NOT have a NextPay credit account, nor had I ordered any items for 2 years, and in July 2022 I was sent an invitation for early access to the sale via text message.
The only criteria I met was that I had previously opened an online account with Next in order to buy click and collect items during lockdown (almost 2 years before), other than that I have never used this account as I prefer to shop in-store.
This could mean that Next are relaxing or changing their VIP criteria, so watch this space for more details.
What can prevent me being offered a Next VIP slot?
As well as not being an existing registered customer of Next online, if you book a VIP slot and then don’t use it, this could prevent you from being offered one in the future.
Of course, you can use your VIP slot to look and then not buy anything, but if you book the slot and then don’t log in, this would count as not using it, as well as preventing another customer from having the slot.
What happens when you get a Next VIP slot
If you are lucky enough to get a Next VIP slot invite, you will be emailed an account specific code to access the VIP site. This means you won’t be able to transfer the code to friends or family.
It is worth pointing out that the Next VIP sale is hosted on a separate website to the regular Next site. Amongst other reasons, this will prevent the site from overloading with too many visitors, but it also means that you can’t transfer items between your VIP shopping basket and the regular Next site, so you might want to bear that in mind.
Once you enter your code, you will be given access to preview the sale items and shop before anyone else.
I don’t have a Next VIP slot – can I still access the Next Sale?
Yes! Despite being offered a VIP slot last July, I have never accessed the VIP sale online as I prefer to shop in store. I have still found some great Boxing Day bargains as you can see in this post. (And no, I’m not one of those crazy people who get up at 3am and queue outside!)
Accessing the Regular Next Sale in Store
The first day of the Next Sales in store can be very busy. The opening times of each store can vary, so make sure you check times before setting off. Larger branches can open as early as 5am for bargain hunters.
Some people even queue up outside in the early hours waiting for the shop to open – I can’t say this is something that has ever appealed to me just for the sake of getting some bargains, but plenty of people do!
However, I have been known to head to the Boxing Day sales at Next for around 7.30am – in my experience this is a great time as there are no queues. The “hardcore” 5am people have been and gone, while the vast majority have not made it out yet.

What time does the Next sale go online?
The regular Next sale goes online in the early hours on the date announced. There is likely to be a countdown on the site before it goes live so you can keep track of the start time.
Does Next have a Black Friday sale?
Although they have participated in the past, in 2020 and 2021 there was no Black Friday event at Next. Instead, the biggest and best bargains could be found at the Boxing Day sales at Next.
Other ways to save money at Next
Use cashback where available
Currently, Next is not a retailer where you can get cashback at Topcashback, Quidco or Airtime Rewards, but this may change in the future so it is always worth double checking.
However, you can get 2% cashback at Next when you shop via Zilch. See more about Zilch and how you can get £10 credit here.
Ask for gift vouchers for Christmas or Birthdays
This is something I take full advantage of to maximise value in the Boxing Day sales. I am lucky that I have a large extended family where a lot of Christmas gifts are vouchers for ease and practicality.
I can get far more value by buying sale items with my Next vouchers than if the gift giver had bought me an actual present from Next full price before the sale.
Head to Next Clearance stores
A little disclaimer here – I can’t say I’m a massive fan of the Next Clearance Stores. Often located at outlet villages and retail parks, they have all the leftovers from the main store sales as well as their own lines of clothes indicated with an SP (Special Purchase) on the label.
Personally, I don’t find some of the SP items to be of the same quality as the regular Next stores, but this is just my own opinion. The t-shirts in particular appear to be a cheaper, thinner material than those in the regular shops. However, the quality is still ok, just not as good as Next’s usual lines.
Additionally, because the rest of the stock is the unsold sale items, the clearance stores can be a bit of a jumble sale. However, if you’re prepared to spend time sorting through, some customers rave about the bargains they’ve managed to find.
Buy on Vinted or other selling platforms
Ok, it’s not quite the same, but Vinted and other online selling platforms have some amazing bargains. If you don’t fancy preloved, you can filter your searches to NWT (New With Tags) items only.
You will be amazed at how cheap some of the items are, especially when you can see the tag with the original selling price. Even if the person bought it in the sale themselves, you can still get a bargain. Obviously you can do this with any brand, but as Next are a popular high street shop, there are an abundance of items.
Here’s a quick search on NWT Next items in November 2022:
Remember with Vinted, you pay a buyer protection fee of 70p per item plus 7% of the item’s price, or 30p + 8%, as well as the postage. Even with these costs on top, you can get some great bargains like these.
Baby and children’s clothing in particular can be found NWT at bargain prices as children can grow out of the items before they have had chance to be worn.
Of course, you don’t just have to stick to Next either!
